WHO LOOKS AT YOU MOST?
Studies suggest the average person looks in the mirror between eight and 23 times a day. No kidding, really!!!Even if you are in the 23 times a day category…your significant other, children, and co-workers look at you more than that each day. They are the true experts in looking at you!! They are the best judges of how the world sees you. Let them help pick your final professional headshot.
YOU ARE TOO CRITICAL (of yourself)
Many of us are harshly critical of our own looks. When we look at ourselves in the mirror, we focus on things we perceive as flaws. We are just too critical of ourselves.
This carries over to when we pick our own portrait. We tend to choose portraits that hide our perceived flaws—the key word here is “perceived”. They aren’t flaws…they are what make you unique. A lot of times we do this at the expense of the best portrait.
The people who love you, work with you, and spend the most time with you are more often than not going to pick the portrait that best represents YOU and how the world sees YOU…even if its not how you see yourself when you look in the mirror.
DON'T TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT
Still not convinced. Here are few real life examples.
Practice what you Preach: This past November, I had new professional headshots taken. I realized that I couldn’t be a hypocrite, so I let my wife and two co-workers select my portraits. They all agreed on the same photo. It was definitely not the photo I would have picked, but how can I argue with people that I trust and see me every day. On as side note…the positive comments I have received on the professional headshot have been overwhelming.
Unanimous Decision: We recently had a real estate agent come in for professional headshots. When we sent the proofs, we mentioned our favorite photo from the session. We actually thought it was so good we wanted to us it in our portfolio It was definitely the best photo.
Needless to say, it definitely wasn’t her favorite photo. That night, she went home and showed her family. Her husband and three kids all picked the same exact professional headshot that we did. She was truly amazed. She has been using that portrait for her business.
If nothing else…even if you ignore all this advice, at least get input from others before picking your final professional portrait. It will make a big difference.
