Seniors Class of 2011

Portrait Suggestions:

General Portrait Suggestions

1-For indoor portraits, most seniors bring two outfits including one dressier outfit and one that is more casual.  It’s good to have a few options when picking your portraits, so bringing your favorite casual outfit (the way you really are) and your favorite dressy outfit (the way Mom wants to see you) is always a good idea.

2-Classic solid colors work best with the light blue background.  Patterns usually look very busy.

Remember- fashions can be great, but it’s a good idea to wear at least one outfit that will likely not be labeled as obviously trendy.  The thing about fashion is that it goes out of fashion—you might be happy with your photos for a year, and then be terribly embarrassed you actually wore such an outfit five years down the road.

3-Be aware of colors and skin tones and which colors look better on you.  Beware of wearing just white unless you’re wearing some color over it.  Also please consider ironing outfits; clothing that looks fine in everyday life can look especially bad in photographs if it contains wrinkles.

Digital Touch Up

Glasses- lens glare is nearly impossible to avoid.  It is best to have an empty pair of frames; otherwise the glare requires an extra touch-up.

Blemishes, scares, and braces- Can be removed digitally, but there is an extra charge to remove these areas.

Acne-Don't worry if you have a sudden outbreak of acne!  Acne can be touched-up and removed for an extra charge, however, if you attempt to cover it up with extra make-up it usually shows in the portrait.  Leave the acne un-covered and it will be much easier to hide.

Hair-Hairstyles are almost impossible to fix digitally .  If you’ve had a very bad hair cut right before the portrait session, please feel free to call us and re-schedule.  After all, we want you to be happy with your photos and if you know you dislike your hair you are unlikely to be happy.  If you are very particular about your hair, please advise a parent or friend with you at the portrait session to keep an eye out for you.

Facial Hair- If you ordinarily shave, it’s important to shave before your portrait.  Facial hair cannot be touched-up or removed, so a cleanly shaved look always looks best.

Clothing Suggestions

Guys

Almost 90% wear some sort of collared shirt.  Outfits range from t-shirts to tuxedos, but we believe polo’s or jackets & ties look great.  If you are wearing just a button down shirt, they usually show a lot of wrinkles.

Girls

Avoid wearing sleeveless or low-cut shirts.  Sleeveless tend to make you look heavier than normal, so short-sleeved and long-sleeved solid-colored shirts work the best.

OUTDOOR CLOTHING SUGGESTIONS

Every portrait session is a unique experience that reflects a person’s own personality.

That being said, please feel free to bring along accessories that will help convey your personality or interests, items such as musical instruments, sports equipment, jackets, hats, hobby items, and electronic equipment will help convey YOU in the portraits. An essential goal of senior portraits is to capture your unique personality, style and interests and what better way to convey these attributes to others than to include them as an integral part of your senior portraits.

We try to schedule location sessions to take advantage of the best times of the day.  Outdoor light looks best earlier in the day and later.

You may bring whatever outfits you want to wear; however, there are some clothes that photograph better than others.  Patterns and/or words tend to be distracting.  The brighter the patterns, the more distracting they will be.  This isn’t to say that patterns or words are ALWAYS a bad idea—if you really like the outfit please bring it in, but solids generally photograph better than bright patterns.

If you are uncertain about your clothing choices, bring in more than the suggested total outfits and we can choose what will look best at the studio.

It is strongly recommended to bring in a family member or a friend (or both!). They will have the benefits of helping put you at ease, they can check your hair, help you with props, give you clothing advice, and in general give you moral support. Plus they get to enjoy the portrait session with you!
